The 14th Annual Cherokee Gourd Artists’ Gathering

The Cherokee Gourd Artists’ Gathering presents the opportunity for gourd artists from across the United States and Canada to meet for one weekend a year to exchange ideas and collaborate on gourd art. Classes provided at this event include wood burning, carving, painting and sculpting, and range from beginner to advanced levels. Other activities include silent auction, live auction, and raffles throughout the event. The Gourd Artists’ Gathering is free to the public. Class sizes and fees vary; classes often fill up quickly.

Come on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday to see our wonderful displays of finished gourds for raffle, auction, and theme contest. On Sunday, there will still be plenty of opportunities to shop, but our large displays will be dismantled as the display gourds will have been given to the various activity winners.

Cherokee Bonfire

The Cherokee Summer Carnival presents family-friendly fun with a variety of vendors, food, games, karaoke, and literally dozens of carnival rides. The carnival will be open for five full days of entertainment and a summer celebration you can’t miss. Entrance is free to the public. Ride ticket prices:

Cherokee’s family bluegrass music festival takes place June 8–10, 2017 with some of the brightest stars in bluegrass music. There will be live music daily from noon to 10:30 p.m. at the Happy Holiday RV Village and Campground in Cherokee. The performance lineup includes: Thursday, June 8 – Jimbo Whaley & Greenbrier, Volume Five, Feller Hill & The Bluegrass Buckaroos, Joe Mullins & The Radio Ramblers, Old Friends (Lawson & Williams - one 90-minute show), and Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver (one 90-minute show) Friday, June 9 – Breaking Grass, The Farm Hands, The Little Roy & Izzy Show, The Crowe Brothers, Rhonda Vincent & The Rage, Gene Watson & The Farewell Part Band (one 90-minute show with special guest Rhonda Vincent) Saturday, June 10 – Deeper Shade of Blue, The Harris Brothers, Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road, Goldwing Express, VW Boys, Daily & Vincent (one 90-minute show) Advance tickets for adults (ages 13 and older) are $40 daily, or $90 for all three days. 20th Annual Cherokee Voices Festival

The voices of an 11,000-year-old culture are inviting you to come out and play. Cherokee culture speaks in its most thrilling ways through dance, music, storytelling, and arts and crafts. You’re invited to hear and experience it all during the Cherokee Voices Festival, now in its 20th year. It’s free of charge and held at the Museum of the Cherokee Indian. Cherokee Heritage Day

Hands on activities, storytelling, dance, and cultural demonstrations will be offered from 11 a.m.—5 p.m. Each month we will feature a theme different, so you can come on a regular basis and continue to learn about the Cherokee history and culture. In Cherokee language, January is Dunolvtanv, the windy month.  Demonstrations this month will highlight blowguns, flute playing, and storytelling.

Event Schedule:

11 a.m.—12 p.m. Flute playing workshop with Jarrett Wildcatt

Bring your own flute, purchase one in the Museum Store, or borrow one from the Museum—for the first ten participants. 

12 p.m.—1 p.m. Blowgun workshop

Cherokee Friends will demonstrate fire making, the atlatl, and chunkey stones, weather permitting.

HIke the Smokies: Charlies Bunion

The Charlies Bunion hike is 8.0 miles with a moderately strenuous 1,650 foot ascent and features panoramic views and the Appalachian Trail with the highlight of the hike being the Appalachian Trail Ridgerunners.

Twelve Hours of Tsali

XTERRA Tsali Off Road Triathlon

Where: Tsali Recreation Area, Bryson City

 The ½ mile lake swim will start off the event as athletes will begin on East shore and swim out to a point in the lake marked with buoys and then back to the beach. After exiting the water the racers will face a short run to the transition area to begin the 5 mile run course on the "right loop alternate" trail. The mountain bike leg, which consists of a 10 mile loop will take the riders around the popular "left loop" to the finish in the transition area.   More info

This event features fireworks of another kind, which means a three-day explosion of authentic Indian music, dancing, food, and festivities. Dance competitions kick off the excitement with over $60,000 in prize money. Spectators travel cross-country to see a powwow as spectacular as this. So come join us as the ground erupts in a sea of twirling color at the height of our tourist season. This action-packed weekend includes colorful regalia, jaw-dropping dances, and music made to move you. Experience authentic tribal foods, browse traditional Indian crafts, and get an insider’s look at a rich, ancient culture. Cost is $12 daily or just $10 when you bring and donate three cans of food.
